Prince Frederick, MD – A Calvert County teenager indicted as an adult in connection with a shooting that occurred earlier this years entered guilty pleas on two counts and was sentenced in Circuit Court Thursday, Aug. 17. Daquan Edward Holloway, 17 of Lusby, pleaded guilty to first-degree assault and firearm use in a felony violent crime. Judge E. Gregory Wells sentenced Holloway to 25 years on the assault charge, suspending all but nine years. On the firearm charge Holloway was sentenced to 15 years with all but five years suspended. The sentences are consecutive. Holloway is to serve his 14-year sentence in the Maryland Department of Corrections and was also given five yearsโ€™ probation. The most serious charge Holloway was indicted on was attempted first-degree murder, an offense that carries a maximum penalty of life in prison.

The incident that led to Hollowayโ€™s arrest occurred during the evening hours of Jan. 13. The incident was described by investigators as a marijuana sale that turned into a robbery and then a shooting, with Holloway allegedly shooting in the chest a man who had come to the Calvert Towne Road area of Prince Frederick to buy three grams of marijuana. After taking the victimโ€™s money without giving the victim the marijuana, Holloway began to run away with the victim in pursuit. While making his getaway Holloway allegedly turned and fired one shot at the victim. Hollowayโ€™s active IPhone was found by detectives at the crime scene. A series of texts aided investigators in identifying Holloway as the triggerman. The defendant was taken into custody a few days later at Patuxent High School.

โ€œIt was a horrible thing,โ€ Wells told Holloway. โ€œMany people die from the wound you inflicted upon him.โ€

The victimโ€™s father told the court his son is making a recovery but not without some hardship on the family and numerous trips to the hospital. He called the shooting of his son โ€œa cowardly act.โ€

โ€œI kind of like dropped the ball on him,โ€ Hollowayโ€™s father admitted to the court, admitting he was dealing with some personal issues while his son was growing up. He asked Wells to โ€œtake into consideration his age.โ€

โ€œThe defendant set up a robbery,โ€ said Assistant Stateโ€™s Attorney Ashley Sowls. โ€œHe took it a step further.โ€ Sowls added that the victim was still alive โ€œbecause of the mercy of God and the medical teamโ€ at Baltimore Shock Trauma.

Hollowayโ€™s attorney, Shelly Lawon Brown, told the court Holloway โ€œneeds to be rehabilitated. He was running away a got scared. He made the wrong choice.โ€

โ€œI do accept responsibility for my actions,โ€ said Holloway. โ€œI do think Iโ€™m a good person but I make bad decisions.โ€

Holloway appears to be headed for Patuxent Institute where he could be enrolled in a youth offender rehabilitation program.
