Roman, mother Clare and father David Gutwald.
Prince Frederick, MD – The sounds of Brahmsโ Lullaby filled the corridors of Calvert Health Medical Center early Tuesday morning, Jan. 2 as the hospitalโs first baby of 2019 arrived. Calvertโs first baby is a classicโRoman Francis Gutwald. โWe picked a girlโs name right away,โ said Clare, the babyโs mother, adding that when she and David, the babyโs father, found out 16 weeks ago it was a boy some revision had to be made. โWe both liked the name Roman, I wanted something that is classicโ said Clare, who, after almost 17 hours in labor gave birth at 7:34 a.m. Roman weighed seven pounds and nine ounces at birth. As she and David calmed and caressed little Roman, Clare explained that shortly after the birth the staff at the birthing center wheeled her over to the wall switch that triggers the playing of the classical lullaby to mark the occasion.ย ย
Clare and David reside in Broomes Island. She works at Stoneyโs and attends classes at the College of Southern Maryland while David is an electrical technician for a company in Rockville. โIโm excited and a little tired,โ said Clare, adding that she is looking forward to motherhood. She is the oldest of five children and Roman is her parents first grandchild.
Originally, Roman wasnโt due until Jan. 6. The labor, however, began Jan. 1.
โIt was a beautiful event,โ is how Romanโs maternal grandmother, Bobbie Woollen of Port Republic described the birth.
Calvert Health Medical Center Director of Public Relations and Marketing Amy Brady presented the new parents with a gift bag from the hospital. One of the items is a small baby blue teddy bear with a shirt that reads โI was born at Calvert Health Medical Center.โ
David Gutwald said he was at the hospital when his son was born. Despite getting only a little sleep he has been back on his job. Mother and baby will be going home by the end of the week.
