Patuxent High School Principal Nancy V. Highsmith issued the following statement Wednesday afternoon in a letter to parents about a suspicious item that caused a scare at the school.
I want to share with you information about an event that has affected our school. I am sending you this letter to give you the facts and to assure you that we have addressed this incident.
At approximately 12:40 p.m. one of our safety advocates on a routine walk of the grounds came upon a suspicious item. We contacted appropriate school and law enforcements officials.
We moved students from three portable classrooms into the main building to ensure their safety while the investigation continued.
After the investigation the grounds were deemed safe for normal activity. The suspicious item was determined to be a part of a piece of equipment.
