The March 2013 Charles County Department of Community Services issue of The SCOOP will be available online at www.CharlesCountyMD.gov/CS on Friday, March 22. Printed copies of the SCOOP will also be available at your local senior center starting on Friday, March 22.

The SCOOP contains news, special events, and trips to Gold Isles of Georgia, Eastern Caribbean and Opryland. This issue also features the Maryland Senior Idol, Cancer of the Colon Health Forum, the 21st Annual Southern MD Caregivers Conference, and many other exciting activities.

The Waldorf Senior Center is providing a bus to cheer on vocalist Marion Dundas and Kathy Keough who will be representing Charles County in the seventh annual Maryland Senior Idol program.ย  The competition will be held at the Bowie Center for the Performing Arts on Wednesday, April 3. The Area Council on Aging will host a Cancer of the Colon Health Forum on Thursday, April 11 from 11:30 a.m. – 2 p.m at the Clark Senior Center.ย  Learn about diagnosis, prevention, and treatment methods as it relates to Cancer of the Colon. The forum moderator is Dr. Guillermo Sanchez, with Dr. Seetaramayya Nagula, Dr. Suryakant J. Patel and Dr. Krishan Mathur as the presenters. The registration deadline is 10 a.m. on Friday, April 5.ย  Call Ms. Janice Hamby at 301-609-5702 to register.

The Clark Senior Center will host the 21st Annual Southern MD Caregivers Conference on Friday, April 26 from 8 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.ย  This event is designed for the family caregiver.ย  The fee is $22 and the registration deadline is Friday, April 12.

The Indian Head Senior Center will feature a costumed living history presentation on the life of Rosalie Calvert and the War of 1812 on Tuesday, April 30 at 11 a.m.ย  This is a free event.ย 

The Living Well: Chronic Disease Self-Management Program will start on Wednesday, May 8 from 1 p.m. -3:30 p.m.ย  This is a six-week program at the Waldorf Senior Center.ย  The program is open to adults with chronic conditions and caregivers.ย  The fee is $20 for class supplies.
