April 25 marked the first day of the Red Lobster-sponsored Cops and Lobsters program in Charles County. The program, originally created in 1996 by Red Lobster as a way to raise money for the Special Olympics, has become an annual tradition across the nation.

This year, Sgt. Augustus Proctor leads the way for Charles County Sheriff Deputies who wait on patrons of the Red Lobster in Waldorf from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. for two days.

Proctor stated โ€œWe bus tables, refresh drinks and ask for donations for the Special Olympics.โ€ He indicated that every one involved with the program with the Sheriffโ€™s Department has a great time.

Lt. Karl Hennse, involved with the Charles County program for six years said, โ€œWhen I went to Deep Creek Lake and awarded medals to Special Olympic athletes, I was hooked. To see the determination and effort by these Olympic athletes is incredible.โ€

Each year, the program seems to generate more revenue for the Special Olympics. Proctor stated that they raised a little over $6,000 his first year and more than $8,000 in 2007. He expects this year to continue the trend.

Red Lobster General Manager, Prentice Haley was enthused by the efforts of the deputy sheriffโ€™s. โ€œWe have been involved since the beginning of the program and now that the customers understand what it is all about, everyone has a good time with the event.โ€ He admitted that in the early years some patrons not as receptive as they are now.

Based on the smiles around the restaurant, this year looks to be another banner year for the effort.
