Chesapeake Beach, MD – A motorist who was arrested and charged following a collision in Calvert County Saturday, Oct. 31 in which a Montgomery County couple riding a tandem bicycle were killed, has been freed on bond, court officials reported.
The driver of a Jeep Grand Cherokee involved in the midafternoon collision on Tobacco Road in Chesapeake Beach is facing criminal and traffic charges. The Jeep drive is identified as Catherine Frances Lyon, 62 of Huntingtown (pictured below). According to documents on file in District Court, Lyon was charged two counts each of negligent homicide under the influence and homicide with a motor vehicle while impaired by alcohol. She was additionally cited for driving under the influence, driving while impaired, failure to pass safely at a distance of at least three feet, failure to use care to avoid collision with a bicycle, following too closely, failure to control speed to avoid a collision, reckless driving and negligent driving.
According to the Calvert County Sheriff’s Office, John Henrik Fauerby, 64 and Lynne Frances Rosenbusch, 58, both of Clarksburg, were operating a tandem bicycle northbound on Tobacco Road. Lyon was also traveling northbound. Shortly before 3 p.m. the came up from behind the cycle and struck its rear, ejecting both Fauerby and Rosenbusch. Police said Rosenbusch was pronounced dead at the scene while Fauerby succumbed to his injuries after being transported to Calvert Memorial Hospital.
Lyon was released from the Calvert County Detention Center, posting $200,000 bond following a hearing Sunday, Nov. 1 with a court commissioner. A hearing on the case is tentatively scheduled for Jan. 27 at District Court in Prince Frederick.
The incident remains under investigation by Cpl. Thomas Phelps and members of the Calvert County Sheriff’s Office’s Crash Reconstruction Team. Anyone who might have information that could aid investigations is asked to contact Phelps at 410-535-2800.
