Mechanicsville, MD – An early morning fire sparked by an electrical malfunction totally destroyed a 70-foot-by-40-foot barn in St. Mary’s County, state officials reported. According to the Maryland State Fire Marshal’s Office, the blaze occurred Tuesday, April 25 on New Market Turner Road in Mechanicsville. It was discovered and reported at approximately 4:30 a.m.
“The cause of the fire was an electrical malfunction of an extension cord,” a deputy state fire marshal reported. “The barn is a complete loss as a result of the fire. There were no injuries.”
Twenty firefighters responded to the one-alarm fire and brought the flames under control in 20 minutes. The estimated loss to the structure and its contents is $50,000.
The fire marshal identified the barn owner as Nancy Dodge and the discoverer of the fire as Stephen Abell.
