Mechanicsville, MD – An early morning fire sparked by an electrical malfunction totally destroyed a 70-foot-by-40-foot barn in St. Maryโ€™s County, state officials reported. According to the Maryland State Fire Marshalโ€™s Office, the blaze occurred Tuesday, April 25 on New Market Turner Road in Mechanicsville. It was discovered and reported at approximately 4:30 a.m.

โ€œThe cause of the fire was an electrical malfunction of an extension cord,โ€ a deputy state fire marshal reported. โ€œThe barn is a complete loss as a result of the fire. There were no injuries.โ€

Twenty firefighters responded to the one-alarm fire and brought the flames under control in 20 minutes. The estimated loss to the structure and its contents is $50,000.

The fire marshal identified the barn owner as Nancy Dodge and the discoverer of the fire as Stephen Abell.
