On Friday, Feb. 3, Benjamin Bannekerย  Elementary School held its second quarterly awards assemblies. For the 5th Graders it was a chance to celebrate numerous honors, and a new name for their gymnasium.

Among the awards were citizenship, bus safety, academic achievement, and attendance. When it came time for the students with High Honors (all As) and Honors (As and Bs) to stand on the stage to be recognized there were remarkably few left seated.

ย Principal, Ms. Montgomery also used the assembly to announce a dedication of the schoolโ€™s gym, where the assembly was held, as the Trusteesโ€™ Gymnasium. The dedication recognizes the first organized group of parents to support Benjamin Banneker Elementary, which was at that time an all-black school in a farmhouse, and the gymnasium was in part chosen because it is an area that has been kept intact during subsequent renovations to the school building.
