The St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office is currently investigating a theft scheme. The nature of the crime is as follows:
A white male, mid thirties, approximately 5-11 tall, 225 pounds with blue eyes., goes door to door in the Mechanicsville area of St. Mary’s County requesting to borrow money. The individual tell unsuspecting victims that his daughter is hospitalized at Children’s Hospital in Washington D.C. and he is trying to borrow gas money to go and visit her. He asks to borrow $20.00 to $30.00 dollars and tells the victim he will repay the money when he receives his next pay check. Victims lend the man money and he never returns to repay the funds.
The St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office would like to remind citizens to be mindful of such scams and cautious of whom they lend money to. Individual’s who believe they may have been a victim of this theft scheme are asked to contact the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office at (301) 475-8008.
