(Waldorf, MD., Jul. 19, 2017) – The Southern Maryland Blue Crabs (6-6) were defeated by the York Revolution (6-7) 8-2, behind five RBIโ€™s from Dayron Varona.ย

The Blue Crabs got the scoring started early, putting up a run of Jay Gause (4-1) in the bottom of the first. After two quick outs, Gause walked Zach Wilson, putting a man on for All-Star Michael Snyder. Snyder picked up his league-leading 25th double, scoring Wilson from first, and giving the Blue Crabs a 1-0 lead.

The lead didnโ€™t last long however, as the Revolution responded with three runs in the top of the second inning. Back-to-back singles started the inning, before a sacrifice bunt put two men in scoring position for Varona. Varona came through with a single, scoring both runners, and putting the Revs ahead. After another single moved Varona to third, a fielderโ€™s choice from Alonzo Harris allowed him to cross the plate, putting York ahead 3-1.

The Revs added a pair of runs in the third, stringing together four more hits off Pat McCoy (2-5). A one-out single from Michael Burgess got the rally started, with Luis Cruz following with one of his own. A sacrifice fly scored Burgess, before two batters later a Varona single scored Cruz, opening up a 5-1 lead for York.

Southern Maryland looked to fight back in the fourth, with Wilson and Snyder leading the charge once again. Wilson led-off the inning with a double, advancing to third on a single from Snyder. Two batters later, L.J. Hoes picked up a sacrifice fly, scoring Wilson and cutting the deficit to 5-2.

York quickly extended the lead back to four runs, with Varona tripling to score Jared Mitchell in the top of the fifth. The Revolution added two more runs in the seventh, extending their lead to 8-2. Cruz singled to lead-off, with Carlos Triunfel walking behind him. Mitchell followed with a double, scoring Cruz for the first run of the inning. Varona was next, picking up his fifth RBI on a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Triunfel from third.

Gause continued to dominate on the other side for York, giving up just two runs on three hits over seven innings of work. The Revs bullpen picked up where he left off, working a scoreless eighth and ninth to clinch the 8-2 win, and finish off the series. The win moves the Revolution to a tie for first in the Freedom Division second-half standings, just 0.5 games ahead of Southern Maryland.
