(Waldorf, MD., Apr. 30, 2017) – The Southern Maryland Blue Crabs (5-5) lost the series finale to the Bridgeport Bluefish (6-4), losing two of three in their first road series of their 10th Anniversary Season.
The Blue Crabs got on the board early, putting up two runs in the first inning, with leadoff hitter Gary Brown and second baseman Danny Muno coming across to score in the inning. Southern Maryland extended their lead to 5-0 in the second, scoring three runs on two Bridgeport errors.
The Bluefish began the comeback in the bottom of the second, with a Yefry Reyes double cutting the lead to 5-2. The teams traded runs in the third, with Zach Cone scoring his first of two runs on the day, and Bridgeport’s Ozney Guillen scoring on a Sean Burroughs double to bring the score to 6-3. After back-to-back errors from the Blue Crabs infield in the fifth, Bridgeport scored four runs off of reliever Cody Hebner (0-1), giving them their first lead of the ballgame at 7-6. The lead grew to 9-6 in the bottom of the sixth, as Alberto Callaspo and Burroughs came across to score in the inning.
Southern Maryland put up two runs in the seventh, as a pair of singles from Michael Snyder and Zach Cone put them in position to score and cut the Bridgeport lead to 9-8. The Blue Crabs third error of the game cost them an insurance run in the eighth, before Bridgeport turned the game over to their closer, David Carpenter (S,3). Carpenter, working with a 10-8 lead, sat the Blue Crabs down in order, locking up the game and series for Bridgeport, while recording his second save of the weekend.
The Blue Crabs return home on Monday, May 1st to face the Sugar Land Skeeters in a four-game series. Southern Maryland will send RHP Gaby Hernandez (1-0, 0.00 ERA) to the mound, looking to win the series opener. He will matchup with former Blue Crab, RHP Jake Hale (2-0, 0.82 ERA) for the Skeeters. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 P.M. on Monday at Regency Furniture Stadium.
