The Southern Maryland Blue Crabs scored 2 runs in the bottom of the first and 3 more in the bottom of the third and from there coasted to a 7-2 win over the Lancaster Barnstormers Sunday, April 29 at Regency Furniture Stadium. The Blue Crabs evened their record at 2-2, splitting their season-opening season series with the Barnstormers. In addition to timely hitting, the home team prevailed with seven strong innings by starter and winner Ben Moore, who struck out six and allowed one run in the third inning. Moore yielded two hits and hit Barnstormer Jamie Pedroza with a pitch. He ended the inning in dramatic fashion by picking off Brad Boyer, who had reached first base on a fielderโs choice.
Blue Crabs first baseman Casey Benjamin had two hits, including his second home run of the season in the bottom of the eighth. Benjamin also sparkled in the field with a diving catch of a line drive in the top of the fifth.
The announced attendance for the Sunday game was 3,170. The Blue Crabs-Barnstormers contest was followed by a showdown between the DC Padres, a team comprised of Roman Catholic clerics, and the St. Maryโs Ryken Knights. The high school squad prevailed 7-2.
On Tuesday, the Blue Crabs host the Sugar Land Skeeters, who are based in the Houston, TX area and are in the Liberty Division of the Atlantic League.
