Leaders of American Legion Gray-Ray Post 220 went before the Calvert County Liquor Board to discuss an incident that occurred recently at the post on Sixes Road, Prince Frederick.
According to Sgt. Todd Ireland of the Calvert County Sheriffโs Office, over 20 officers were dispatched to the post March 16 after a fight broke. Ireland said the melee began inside the building and subsequently spilled into the parking lot and a neighborโs yard. Three arrests were made as a result of the incident.
Post Commander Cheryll Chew assured the liquor board members that she and other post officials have been in contact with the Maryland State Police about hiring off-duty officers to provide security. The post home is frequently rented for private parties and receptions. On March 16, a dance featuring a live deejay was held at the post. Chew said the event was a fundraiser held by a motorcycle club. The post has no prior liquor violations.
Post 220 officials confirmed they have had security cameras installed and there will be surveillance in the parking lot, where they affirm most the trouble at an event has a likelihood of starting. One post official said some of the offenders park their vehicles in the lot and drink in their cars.
โThat canโt be allowed to happen again,โ said liquor board attorney Gene Pitrof, noting the number of law enforcement officers responding to the free-for-all was alarming.
Board member Beth Swoap suggested the panel take no action until a security plan is presented and reviewed. Board chairman Alonzo Barber stated he would have no problem banning liquor sales until a security plan is in place. Board alternate Jack Smack moved to suspend the license until a security plan was presented. The motion passed. Chew told the board she would provide them with information about upcoming events and a security plan. That plan will also be reviewed by the Calvert County Sheriffโs Office.
