One current Leonardtown town commissioner was elected mayor and another was defeated in a re-election bid in Tuesdayโ€™s town election. Daniel Burris, with 255 votes, easily defeated Tomas Mattingly (125 votes), a former county commissioner, and Henry Camiaoni (12 votes), a real estate agent, to replace J. Harry โ€œChipโ€ Norris, who had served as mayor for 17 years and decided not to seek re-election.

Incumbent town commissioner Walter Wise lost his bid for re-election in a three way race for two seats. Wise garnered 135 votes, while Jay Mattingly, a county employee, received 297 votes and Hayden Hammett, a bank employee and member of the planning commission, received 239 votes.

In all, 401 town residents voted in the election, of which 40 were absentee voters. There are 1,564 registered voters in town.

Burris will preside over his first meeting on May 14, which will also be the first meeting on the council for Jay Mattingly and Hayden Hammett. They join Leslie Roberts, Tom Collier and Roger Mattingly on the council.
