On Friday, Jan. 29 at approximately 2:45 p.m., Calvert County received a mutual-aid dispatch call to assist with a church fire in Charles County. Calvert County companies Prince Frederick, Huntingtown and St. Leonard were dispatched to the call in Benedict.
A fire broke out at the St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church on Benedict Avenue. As units arrived on the scene there was smoke showing from all sides of the church and a second alarm was requested. Firefighters were able to to knock down the basement fire quickly and began mop-up operations.
Investigation revealed the fire started in the furnace area of the basement. The fire has caused damage in the sanctuary area and there is smoke damage throughout. Final damage assessments are being investigated.
Church services are scheduled to be held in the church hall.
No injuries were reported.
