Prince Frederick, MD โ 12 years ago, Chris and Dawn Bowen and Heather Scott started a fundraiser to benefit Calvert Hospice after Chrisโ grandfather passed away while receiving hospice care at home. Chris was so pleased with the care that his grandfather received that he wanted to give something back to the organization. He and a group of friends came up with the Poker Run, which just had its 12th anniversary on June 4, 2017.
For those who are unfamiliar with a Poker Run, participants meet at a central location for registration on the morning of the event. Buckets Sports Bar in Lusby has been the host of the Poker Run to Benefit the Hospice House for the last two years. When players register, they are given the first card of their poker hand. They then load up on their motorcycles and drive to the next location where they receive their next card.
The route consists of 5 โ 6 different locations located in Calvert, Charles, and St. Maryโs counties. Riders end up back at Buckets Sports Bar at the end of the ride where they find out who has won. The winner receives a cash prize and will usually donate a portion of the prize back to Calvert Hospice.
Once the poker game is over, the after party begins. Buckets Sports Bar hosted the event this year and provided burgers, hot dogs, buns, and condiments for the 150 poker players and guests who attended. Other members of the 15 person planning committee took care of the rest of the food, donating enough to feed the large crowd.
The after party isnโt just about food. It also provides opportunities to raise even more money through a Live Auction featuring items donated by businesses and individuals throughout the county as well as a raffle for a grill donated by Larryโs Electric.
Chris, Dawn, and Heather are pleased to report that the 2017 event raised $6,742 to support the Burnett Calvert Hospice House. They are looking for donations of auction items, people to serve on their planning committee, and of course, participants for the 2018 event!
