The Calvert County Commissioners presented a proclamation to local law enforcement and two entities Tuesday, Dec. 4, officially kicking off the annual โ€œDesignated Driver Campaign.โ€ In addition to the Calvert County Sheriffโ€™s Office and Maryland State Police (MSP) Prince Frederick Barracks, representatives from the Calvert Alliance Against Substance Abuse (CAASA) and the Calvert County Traffic Safety Council accepted the proclamation declaring the yuletide campaign in effect from now until Jan. 2.

Restaurants, clubs, bars, civic and fraternal organizations and citizens hosting holiday parties are encouraged to participate in the Designated Driver Campaign. All residents are urged to obey a year โ€˜round law and not serve alcohol to anyone under the age of 21.

According to CAASA Coordinator Candace Dโ€™Agostino, four of Calvertโ€™s nine road fatalities in 2012 โ€œwere due to drugs and drunk driving.โ€

  • From the MSP – Trooper Shareef O. Lewis, Tfc. Adam J. Merkleson, Trooper Justin M. Oles, Tfc. Christopher J. Esnes and Tfc. Everett D. West.

โ€œThey set the bar high for taking drunks off the road,โ€ said Sheriff Mike Evans [R] of the honored officers. โ€œWe are going to keep enforcement high and someday we wonโ€™t have this problem.โ€
