The Calvert County Board of Education held its Volunteer of the Year Recognition Program Thursday as part of its regular work session, and followed the event with a reception.

ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย  Earlier in the meeting, the board heard a status report on the athletic programs in the schools, amended its fall calendar and approved the new Student Code of Conduct.

ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย  Supervisor of Transportation and Athletics Kevin Hook presented what he called the โ€œState of Athleticsโ€ and it was a sunny one.

ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย  โ€œFifty-one percent of the students participate in athletics of some sort,โ€ Hook told the board. โ€œThere are, of course, some counted twice, but the number is still well over 40 percent.โ€

ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย  In the past year, Calvert County teams have accumulated eight Southern Maryland Athletic Conference (SMAC) titles, 11 regional titles, two state finalists and one state title with another pending. In addition to the regular interscholastic sports, Calvert โ€œunified sportsโ€ teams have won a SMAC title, state championship and state finalist.

ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย  โ€œUnified Sportsโ€ is a registered program of Special Olympics in which, according to the Maryland Special Olympics web site, โ€œSpecial Olympics athletes and their teammates without intellectual disabilities practice and play together.โ€ There are approximately equal numbers of athletes with and without intellectual disabilities on each squad. Calvert County presently has unified teams in Indoor Bocce (lawn bowling) and track and field, with a tennis team to be added next year.
