Prince Frederick, MD – When the Calvert High School Cavaliers took the field Friday, May 8 they were taking on a St. Charles team that they had beat 34-4 when they played earlier in the season.
However, in the top of the first, St. Charles pushed across a run after a Cody Hill double to lead off the game. He was driven in by teammate Garret Wanzor who hit a single. St. Charles also pushed across a run in the top of the second, after loading the bases, a second Garrett Wanzor single drove in Dominic Ford. After the top of the second inning, Calvert was trailing 2-0.
In the bottom of the second, after a Colin Taeschner double, senior Robbie Stone hit a line drive down the left field foul line that reached and settled into the corner. By the time that St. Charles had gotten the ball back into the infield, Stone had scored. He hit a two run home run that tied the game. After the second inning, Calvert’s pitching had settled down and retired the Spartans in order for the remainder of the game. Calvert next scored in the bottom of the 4th, when another Robbie Stone single drove in teammate Cody Horseman. Calvert tacked on 4 runs total in the 4th, and held a 6-2 lead going into the 5th inning.
St Charles was still baffled by the Cavalier pitching staff, and the Cavaliers made them pay again in the 6th. The Cavaliers pushed across 3 more runs in the home half of the 6th, as they benefitted from several Spartan errors, and pushed the score to 9-2. The Spartans couldn’t push a run across in the top of the 7th, and as a result, their season ended on Friday Night. Calvert advances in the playoffs to play at Patuxent Monday, May 11 at 4:30 PM.
