COBB ISLAND, Md. — The Charles County Sheriff’s Office(CCSO) may soon be bringing fun to a neighborhood near you. In a “pop-up” event that they are planning to have reoccurring on Fridays over the summer, CCSO kicked off their block parties in Cobb Island last week.
But to see the idea which the department hatched in 2019 come to fruition brought joy to residents and officers alike.
“It was a long time coming,” Charles County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Diane Richardson said. “We have a committee of employees who got together before COVID hit to discuss how we can engage with the community in a fun way… We are excited that it is finally here, and to see it was a tremendous success.”
Officers in the Community Services Section oversaw the block party, which featured music, ice cream, cornhole, and other games. All of this while still keeping safety as a top priority.

“We are following CDC guidelines and the guidance of our health department,” Richardson explained. “If things [get worse, we will stop], but right now, we have the green light.”
The CCSO has seen success with community-related pop-up events, starting with one last Christmas that Richardson said got the ball rolling again.
Richardson said that the “Friday Night Lights and Sirens” events are not being publicized by CCSO, but they are planning to host them all around Charles County on Fridays throughout the summer. While the weather may impact their ability to host the events, she says the goal remains the same.
“Our focus is on bringing our services to people,” Richardson said. “They don’t have to come to us. We are going to them.”
