Leonardtown, MD – MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital celebrates the hands that heal each year as we commemorate National Doctors’ Day Wednesday, March 30.
“Our doctors go above and beyond every day to provide the best possible medical care to the patients of MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital,” said Stephen Michaels, MD, Chief Operating Officer and Chief Medical Officer. “We are grateful for their hard work and personal sacrifices as they continually strive to advance the quality of health care offered in our region.”
The MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital Board of Directors will extend its appreciation to the hospital’s medical staff Thursday, March 31. The annual celebration will include a breakfast, special gift and proclamations from the St. Mary’s County Board of Commissioners and the Leonardtown Commissioners.
“We are proud to have such an incredible group of doctors working in our county,” said Barbara Thompson, chairman of the MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital board of Directors. “They have dedicated their lives to the practice of medicine and their skills and commitment are valuable resources for our community.”
There are currently more than 400 doctors affiliated with MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital. Physician services range in scope from general practitioner and internal medicine to highly specialized surgical care such as vascular, orthopaedic and colorectal surgery. Eighty-five percent of physicians practicing at MedStar St. Mary’s are board certified in their specialty and 80 percent practice only at the hospital.
Doctors’ Day was first observed March 30, 1933. Since then, it is celebrated annually to acknowledge the anniversary of the first use of general anesthetic in surgery on March 30, 1842, by physician Crawford Long. In 1991, President George Bush signed a resolution designating March 30 as National Doctors’ Day.
