Tuesday afternoon, while working on a boiler unit, a contractorโs employee fell 50 to 60 feet down a shaft into some duct-work at the Chalk Point power plant.ย A Prince Georgeโs County Fire and Rescue squad arrived at 2:30 p.m. and spent over an hour extricating the man from the duct-work, according to Mirant Mid-Atlantic spokesman David Barney.ย Reports indicate that the worker died at the scene and was pronounced dead about 3 p.m.
Barney told The Bay Net that officials are not yet certain how the man fell.ย Co-workers reported believing he was โtied offโ.ย Officials from the Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) are investigating, Barney said.
The Chalk Point power generating station is an asset of Atlanta-based, Mirant Mid-Atlantic.ย According to Barney, Mirant has not released the name of the victim or the company he worked for out of respect for his family.
