On March 29, several Charles County Department of Emergency Services personnel (Paramedic Paul Balta, EMT-B Tonya Bagley, Paramedic Courtney Shannon, and EMT-I Katy Leal) and Waldorf Volunteer Fire Department personnel (Firefighters Ben Jenkins, Greg Hadsell, Kenny Levey, and Ronny Marconi) were recognized by the Charles County Commissioners for heroic, life-saving actions.
In February 2011, Mr. Balta and Ms. Bagley responded to an obstetrical call involving an unborn child who had the umbilical cord was wrapped around its neck, restricting the airway. The two EMS employees successfully removed the umbilical cord, delivered the child and treated the childโs mother for complications from the difficult birth.
Also in February, Ms. Shannon and Ms. Leal responded to a cardiac-related call. They acted quickly in recognizing that their patient was a STEMI (ST elevation myocardial infarction) patient, and utilized outstanding medical care and fast transport to Southern Maryland Hospital, the closest cardiac intervention center. This resulted in saving the life of a fellow emergency responder!
