Committing a traffic violation around a school bus may soon earn you a citation if a plan to add cameras to school bus passes.ย The Charles County Board of Commissioners heard from the Charles County Sheriffโs Office on Tuesday about the violations and the need for the cameras.
โIโve heard from a number of parents, especially special needs parents, about the dangers they face on these roads,โ Commissioner President Candice Quinn Kelly (D) said.
The plan would place camera systems that monitor speed and take pictures of the car violating the infraction to the school buses.ย It is aimed at ticketing people who pass school buses that are stopped and unloading children.ย Chris Welsh from the Charles County Sheriffโs Office said the office has heard of hundreds of violations of cars passing to the left of a school bus and even to the right of a school bus on the shoulder.
The systems would be run through the company that develops them but the sheriffโs office would still issue the citations.ย A public hearing was set for Tuesday, April 17th at 3:30pm EST.
