
Waldorf, MD – Charles County marked the United States of Americaโs 242nd birthday with a very busy late afternoon and evening of fun. The countyโs โFun-Filled Fourthโ was held at Regency Furniture Stadium Wednesday, July 4. Several food vendors grilled chicken, ribs, steak, fish, burgers, franks, kettle corn, ice cream and other Independence Day favorites to serve to the many revelers who came out early to supervise children enjoying the Family Fun Zone attractions and listen to live music.
The opening act was the Mechanicsville-based band No Green Jellybeenz. They were followed by Southern Maryland favorite Sam Grow. The crowdโmany with lawn chairs and blanketsโgrew considerably as Grow and his band began their set, as the skies grew darker and the time for the traditional fireworks display approached.
Meanwhile, inside the stadium, the hometown Southern Maryland Blue Crabs faced the visiting Somerset Patriots before a large crowd. The St. Maryโs County Sheriffโs Office Honor Guard presented the Colors prior to the start of the game. The Blue Crabs and Patriots werenโt the only on-field performers, as volunteer fans when on field to participate in a tug-of-war, a pie-eating contest and a โhorseโ race. The baseball game was won by Somerset, as they rallied in the top of the seventh, going ahead 6-3. The final was 6-4. The Patriots clinched the first-half Atlantic League of Professional Baseball Clubsโ Liberty Division Championship.ย
After the game, many Blue Crabsโ players, along with their wives and children, sat on the field and enjoyed the impressive fireworks show with the fans in the stands.
