Pie-eating champ shows crowd the money as Queen Nicotina looks on.
La Plata, MD – While many bailed due to an iffy forecast that more rain coming to Southern Maryland, Charles County never flinched despite Florenceโs possible intrusion. The county fair officials remained calm and let the 95th edition just happen as planned. On Saturday, Sept. 15, fairgoers of all ages enjoyed the variety of fun things to do at the grounds in La Plata. During the early afternoon, two bandsโCountry Memories and Honky Tonk Casanovasโhad the tunes cranked up in two different fairgrounds venues.
Meanwhile, on the north side outdoor stage area, a demonstration of state-of-the-art military bomb disposal was presented by trained members of the armed forces who utilized robots to disposal of potentially dangerous ordnance.
Earlier in the week, La Plata High School senior Madison Lucas, 17, was crowned Queen Nicotina for the 2018 county fair. Lucas was sponsored by Charles County Mobile Intensive Care Unit. The first runner-up was Taylor Good, 17, a senior at Henry E. Lackey High School. Good was sponsored by the Little Rascals 4-H Club. Second runner-up was Mackenzie Shugart, 17 of St. Charles High School. Shugart was sponsored by the Charles County Arts Alliance.
The young fairgoers enjoyed the array of rides and games, and just about everyone made a beeline for the food court, where various vendors grilled, smoked and fried popular fair foods. There was also a major food eventโa great American traditionโSaturday afternoon. The childrenโs pie eating contest was held near the green stage. The winner received a cash prize and had his picture taken with her majesty, Queen Nicotina.
There were two casualties of the soggy weather. The Friday evening lawn mower race had to be cancelled as did Saturday eveningโs horse pull.
