Sunday, August 2nd, 2015 the second half of the season has already begun and there are 4 weekends until the playoffs in the Charles- St. Mary’s Men’s Baseball League (CHASM). This weekend consisted of 6 exciting games, with 4 of them being among the top 5 teams in the league heading off against each other. On Saturday, August 1st, #1 St. Mary’s took on #5 Black Sox. St. Mary’s was able to get away winning what ended up being a close game, 13-12. Also on Saturday, #2 Western Charles took on #4 Cubs. The Cubs took the win over Western Charles (7-5) shaking up the standings and moving Bumpy Oak into 2nd place. The third and final game of Saturday was between the Bayhawks and the Storm. The Bayhawks are currently fighting for the #5 spot which is the last seed to make the playoffs. The Bayhawks led most of the way during the game, but the Storm was able to ignite a comeback. Down by 4 in the 9th inning they scored 7 runs to end up taking the game, 15-12 ending in exciting fashion. That was the first win of the year for the Storm.
On Sunday the first game of the day was between St. Mary’s and Western Charles at Rainbow Construction Field. It was a close game the entire day with St. Mary’s leading most of the way. St. Mary’s scored the first run of the day but Western Charles was able to come back and tie it up. By the end of the 9th inning the score was 2-2. In extras, both teams were able to get the bases loaded but no runs were able to get across the board. In the bottom of the 12th inning, St. Mary’s center fielder #1 Josh Morris snagged what looked like a home run and game winner away from Western Charles, extending the game, until the bottom of the 13th inning when Western Charles Catcher #35 Chris Blondin hit a walk off home run to right field to take the win over St. Maryโs (final score 4-2).ย St. Mary’s remains at the top of the league by 3 games.
The 2nd game on Sunday was held at Gwynn Park High School between the Storm and the Black Sox. The Black Sox won the game with the final score ending 17-7. It was a big win for the Black Sox who remain in 5th place by 2.5 games. The 3rd and final game of the day was again at Rainbow Construction Field between #2 Bumpy Oak (DNP Saturday; earned 2nd place after Western Charles loss Saturday) and #4 Cubs. Bumpy Oak won the game 8-5 remaining in 2nd place with a record of 11-5. Branden Remalia and Clint Sanders of Bumpy Oak both had home runs and manager Ray Michael hit a 2 out pinch hit double to give Bumpy Oak the lead in the 7th inning. Bumpy Oak is now on a 4 game win streak and has not lost a game since July 18th.
