First there was the gathering of the people, followed by the gathering of storm clouds. The bayside town of Chesapeake Beach was challenged by a heavy thunderstorm Sunday, July 3. The town traditionally holds its fireworks display on the eve of Independence Day. By mid-afternoon parking was at a premium, waders had crowded the waterpark, picnickers were enjoying grilled hot dogs and hamburgers, and the Rod โNโ Reel was teeming with activity. The soulful sounds of โOld Schoolโ had revelers singing and dancing at the outdoor cafรฉ.
Gerald Donovan, the co-owner of the Rod โNโ Reel, looked skyward and admitted he had been worried about the weather for most of the day.
Around 7 p.m. the skies began to darken and 20 minutes later the lightning and rain sent everybody scrambling for cover.
The heavy rain eventually abated and shortly after 9 p.m. the fireworks show began.
The Chesapeake Beach fireworks show is funded by the town, which also extended the hours of operation at the waterpark to 10 p.m.
The exodus of traffic was less of a problem this year, thanks to a plan by the Calvert County Sheriffโs Office. The plan eliminated all left hand turns on a portion of Route 261 through the Twin Beaches area. Cones were set up in the middle of the road to deter motorists from attempting U-turns. This tactic minimized stopping and make for an easier exit for out-of-town fireworks show attendees.
