The Great Mills Hornets celebrated their last home football game in 2010 with their Homecoming festivities.
It was a chilly night, with temperatures dropping to the upper 40’s with a light breeze. The band kept the crowd hopping
throughout the evening, as the action on the field was as hard hitting as one would expect when the Chopticon Braves came to town.
In this matchup, the home team has not been able to give their fans a victory for the last three seasons and this continued as the Braves dominated the final three quarters winning 47-19. The game had the feeling of a playoff
matchup early on, as neither team was able to score until Josh Gray took a 10 yard slant pass from Chopticon QB Cody Douglas in for the TD.
The Braves jumped out to a 27-0 lead in the second quarter on a 43 yard TD pass from Douglas to Sterling Miles and two TD’s from Papa John’s Player Of The Game, RB Stephen Quade (7 YD run and 15 yard reception). Great Mills got on the board with 1:30 remaining in the first half on a 65 yard TD pass from Jordan Hurt to Deandre Berry. Berry scored again in the third quarter, cutting the Chopticon lead to 14 points. The Braves defense did a great job of shutting down the Hornets biggest threat as they kept pressure on Hurt all evening long.
RB Willie Adams scored the first of his two rushing TD’s on a 18 yard run through the middle of the Hornets defense. After Quade scord his third TD on a ten yard run, Adams added a seven yard rushing TD. Kenny Daniels finished the scoring for Great Mills with a 20 yard TD run.
The loss dropped the Hornets to 6th in the 4-A East and eliminated them from playoff contention.Great Mills finishes with games at North Point and at Huntingtown. The Chopticon Braves were vaulted into the 4th position in 3-A South after Huntingtown lost 21-7 at McDonough, and now control their own playoff destiny with home games vs Patuxent and Leonardtown to finish off their regular season. The Braves are also in a position to get as high as a number two seeding by finishing their season with two wins and at least one loss by Friendly and/or Potomac.
