Huntingtown, MD – A Calvert County churchโ€™s congregation is reeling from the devastating news that a young couple deeply involved with its ministerial activities lost their lives in a car accident. Dan and Kayla Amos of California were members of Chesapeake Church in Huntingtown.

Both died from injuries sustained in the three-vehicle crash that occurred on Route 2 in Anne Arundel County on Valentineโ€™s Day, Sunday, Feb. 14. Dan Amos was driving the coupleโ€™s Honda Civic in the southbound lane around 4:25 p.m. when it was struck head-on by a 2002 Toyota Camry, which was headed north. A third vehicle, which was also southbound, then struck both the Honda and Toyota. Dan Amos was pronounced dead at the scene. Kayla Amos was flown to Shock Trauma in Baltimore where she lingered through the night before dying Monday morning, Feb. 15. Dan and Kayla were 21 and 20 and had been married for exactly six months.

โ€œItโ€™s been a pretty big shock,โ€ said Chesapeake Church Executive Pastor Daniel C. Palmer, who added the churchโ€™s staff โ€œis processing it. Itโ€™s very difficult. Dan and Kayla were magnanimous people.โ€

Palmer told The BayNet that the young couple did more work for the church to spread the news of Christianity in their very short lives than some people who live much longer lives do. Dan was involved in music, serving as the churchโ€™s arts staff leader. Kayla, said Palmer, was involved in the churchโ€™s Lobby Coffee Bar and Cafรฉ, a unique Bible study venue at the church that also raised money for two other projectsโ€”End Hunger in Calvert and Honduras Compassion Partners.

โ€œBoth were so extremely talented, but they were humble,โ€ said Palmer. Dan Amos was the leader of Chesapeake Churchโ€™s Youth Band. โ€œHe had a fantastic band,โ€ said Palmer.

While many church staffers were surprised at how young Dan and Kayla were when they got married, Palmer said he theirs was a union meant to be. โ€œIt seems like it was this whirlwind but it just seemed to click,โ€ he said. โ€œThey had strong marriage values. They seemed so young but so mature.โ€
