It took 67 firefighters 45 minutes to control a townhouse fire Monday evening that consumed two neighboring buildings, causing $550,000 in damage.
The Maryland State Fire Marshalโs office reports that investigators determined the fire started on the deck of a townhouse at 7735 C Street, Chesapeake Beach, from a tossed cigarette.
The two-story wood dwelling has sprinkler systems installed, which functioned properly.
When firefighters arrived at 6:20 p.m., two buildings were well engulfed in flames, as the fire spread from the deck to a neighboring building approximately eight feet away.ย The combined damage estimate was $550,000.
Numerous other dwellings were in close proximity and a propane tank was covered in flames when firefighters arrived.
Responding fire volunteer departments included North Beach, Dunkirk, Huntingtown, Prince Frederick, St, Leonard, and companies from Anne Arundel and Prince Georges counties.
The North Beach Ladies Auxiliary also responded to the scene and provided refreshments, as well as dinner afterwards, with assistance on refreshments from the Huntingtown Ladies Auxiliary/Canteen Unit.ย .
There were no injuries reported.
