A fire at a house in Clements on Thursday morning caused extensive damage, according to the Maryland State Fire Marshalโ€™s Office. Damage from the fire at the one-story single family home at 23408 Grampton Road is estimated at $125,000.

The fire was discovered by a neighbor. The occupant of the house, Donald Williams, was not home at the time the fire was reported at 3:30 a.m.

According to Deputy Fire Marshal Don Brenneman, โ€œThe investigation revealed that a kerosene space heater was left burning which ignited nearby combustibles. There were no reported injuries and the owners are being assisted by family members.โ€ The kerosene space heater was in the leaving room.

It took 40 firefighters from the Seventh District, Leonardtown, Mechanicsville, Hollywood, Bel Alton, La Plata and Bay District volunteer fire departments 30 minutes to bring it under control.

There was a smoke alarm in the house but it is not known if it activated. There was no sprinkler system.
