Prince Frederick, MD โ The Adult Day Care of Calvert County and Board of County Commissioners teamed up this past month to #ENDALZ, declaring the month of June as Alzheimerโs and Brain Awareness Month. The proclamation came during the commissionโs last meeting in June, highlighting the impact of diseases that afflict the brain.
โIโm here today to represent the ADCCC [but] this is also a personal issue to me,โ expressed the adult daycareโs treasurer Linda Bracey, who was one of three from the service present to accept the proclamation. Bracey explained that her father was cared for at the adult daycare and that the service provides โa necessary break for the health and care of the providers.โ
Incorporated in 1985, ADCCC is a nonprofit with a primary mission of โenhanc[ing] and maintain[ing] the health, functional independence, and general well-being of frail elderly and disabled adults in Calvert County.โ They accomplish this through a variety of programs available to โeligible participants regardless of their financial status or ability to pay, without discrimination as to race, color, national origin, sex, religion, or handicapped condition.โ
Commissioner Mike Hart [R-district 1] read out the proclamation, stating before that Alzheimerโs and brain diseases โaffect everyone.โ He continued that he doesnโt โthink thereโs a person that doesnโt have a family member or someone that you know that is affected by [Alzheimerโs].โ
Alzheimerโs afflicts around 44 million worldwide with only 1-in-4 receiving a diagnosis. The Alzheimerโs Association states that the disease is the sixth leading cause of death in the U.S., increasing 145% from 2000 to 2017. Alzheimerโs and dementia are projected to cost the U.S. $1.1 trillion by 2050.
The ADCCC and county commissioners encourage the community to promote Alzheimerโs and brain disease awareness by changing social media and your wardrobe purple, tweeting #ENDALZ, and make donations to ADCCC and other organizations.
ADCCC programs include adult Medical Day Care, Senior center Plus, and Adult Day Care Memory Break. For more information on programs, the organization, and how to donate visit their website at http://adcofcalvertcounty.org.
