Prince Frederick, MD – The Adult Day Care of Calvert County and Board of County Commissioners teamed up this past month to #ENDALZ, declaring the month of June as Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness Month. The proclamation came during the commission’s last meeting in June, highlighting the impact of diseases that afflict the brain.
“I’m here today to represent the ADCCC [but] this is also a personal issue to me,” expressed the adult daycare’s treasurer Linda Bracey, who was one of three from the service present to accept the proclamation. Bracey explained that her father was cared for at the adult daycare and that the service provides “a necessary break for the health and care of the providers.”
Incorporated in 1985, ADCCC is a nonprofit with a primary mission of “enhanc[ing] and maintain[ing] the health, functional independence, and general well-being of frail elderly and disabled adults in Calvert County.” They accomplish this through a variety of programs available to “eligible participants regardless of their financial status or ability to pay, without discrimination as to race, color, national origin, sex, religion, or handicapped condition.”
Commissioner Mike Hart [R-district 1] read out the proclamation, stating before that Alzheimer’s and brain diseases “affect everyone.” He continued that he doesn’t “think there’s a person that doesn’t have a family member or someone that you know that is affected by [Alzheimer’s].”
Alzheimer’s afflicts around 44 million worldwide with only 1-in-4 receiving a diagnosis. The Alzheimer’s Association states that the disease is the sixth leading cause of death in the U.S., increasing 145% from 2000 to 2017. Alzheimer’s and dementia are projected to cost the U.S. $1.1 trillion by 2050.
