Prince Frederick, MD –ย On a unanimous vote the Calvert County Commissioners selected Evan K. Slaughenhoupt Jr. [R – District 3] (pictured left) as the boardโ€™s new president at its Tuesday, Dec. 22 meeting. Commissioner Tom Hejl [R – At large] (pictured below) was elected board vice president.

Slaughenhoupt, who is serving in his second term as commissioner, succeeds Steve Weems [R – At large] as the panelโ€™s president.

The cordialness of the selection process indicates a change from the previous board, which was often held acrimonious officer elections.

โ€œEach commissioner should really serve some time [as officer] to gain experience,โ€ said Commissioner Pat Nutter [R – District 2], who served two consecutive terms as board president in 2013 and 2014. โ€œIt requires a lot to be president. It can be a tough job.โ€

Nutter made the single motion to selected Slaughenhoupt and Hejl as board president and vice president, respectively.

โ€œIt has been quite an experience,โ€ said Weems, who thanked the other commissioners for the chance to serve a year as president.

โ€œMy sincerest appreciation to Commissioner Weems,โ€ said Slaughenhoupt, who commended the outgoing president for demonstrating โ€œa high standard of professionalism.โ€

Slaughenhoupt is the boardโ€™s representative to the Maryland Association of Counties (MACo). He is currently serving on MACoโ€™s 11-member Board of Directors.

The Calvert County Commissioners select board officers annually.
