Maryland Comptroller Peter Franchot [D] presented the owners of Beacon Printing of Waldorf with an award for doing “better with less.” The state’s top fiscal officer is handing out the award to one business in each of Maryland’s 24 jurisdictions.
According to aide Christine Feldman, this is the first year the awards have been given. Franchot hopes to make the awards an annual event. The comptroller and his staff visited the Waldorf shop Monday, April 25.
“This is one of the most successful print shops in Maryland,” said Franchot, who commended Beacon’s president, Wayne Magoon, and his partner, Art Grimes, for keeping the printing concern a thriving business in a challenging economy.
“You deliver a great product,” said Franchot. “If all of us focus on performance and results we can give the taxpayer a better product.”
“My partner is the guy who does the numbers,” said Magoon of Grimes. While Beacon’s bosses have not let any employees go due to the economy, Magoon admitted when someone has left the business the remaining staff has taken on new responsibilities.
“The printing industry has taken a hit but our head is still above water,” said Magoon.
Former Maryland Delegate and Charles County Commissioner Murray Levy praised Beacon Printing staff for their involvement in charitable efforts.
“They provide tremendous community support,” said Levy of Beacon, a business that was started in 1975. “They have a great record of giving back to the community.”
“The industry is changing but this is still a great business and Charles County is a nice place to live,” said 16-year employee Kirk Alexander.
According to Feldman, the Charles County Chamber of Commerce recommended Beacon Printing for the comptroller’s award.
