The price of the resurfacing of the Leonardtown High School stadium track has doubled. After the contract was awarded last month it was determined that additional work needed to be done to provide a stable surface.

According to information presented to the school board at its Tuesday meeting by St. Maryโ€™s County Public Schools (SMCPS) Director of Design and Construction Larry Hartwick, โ€œUpon stripping the latex running surface and cleaning the asphalt sub base, it has been determined that the asphalt is dehydrated of oils. These conditions will likely contribute to an early failure of the running surface in the future if not corrected. In order to remedy the existing conditions, the asphalt needs to be milled down two inches, a paving fabric installed, and two inches of new surface asphalt laid.โ€

When the original contract was approved by the board on June 11, they were told that a geotechnical engineer had determined that the asphalt sub base was in โ€œvery good condition.โ€

The original bid of $123,645 plus a $25,000 contingency has now been increased by an additional $120,910.

The work is being performed by American Tennis Courts, Inc. under the National Cooperative Purchasing Alliance general contract. Since the original bid was based on unit pricing there was no need to rebid the additional work, according to Hartwick.

SMCPS Deputy Superintendent Brad Clements said the work can still be done with the originally budgeted amount for the project. Hartwick said the track will be ready for use when the students return from the Labor Day holiday.
