On Friday the Second Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue Squad set out from their firehouse at an unusually somber pace. Fire trucks carried US flags and crossed ladders, and the volunteers were joined by others from neighboring companies, as they honored the late Harry Koehler, a life member of the volunteer fire department, who was transported to St. Georgeโ€™s Catholic Church, in Valley Lee, by Ambulance 68.

Koehler was a member of the Second District Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue Squad from 1967 until his passing on March 5, 2007. During his 40 years of active service, Koehler also served as a board member for 40 years, holding the offices of President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, Assistant Rescue Chief, Captain Rescue, Lieutenant Rescue, Engineer Rescue and County Rescue Chief. He served on numerous Fire and Rescue Associations throughout the state and St. Mary’s County.

โ€œHarry was a huge part of this community and was one of the most respected people in this county. He was County Rescue Chief for a long time. Of all people, this man deserved some recognition,โ€ volunteer Laura Hammett told The Bay Net.

โ€œHarry is an irreplaceable person and will be deeply missed by everyone in our department. His memory will live on in our hearts forever. We send our deepest sympathies to his family during this time of great loss,โ€ said Rescue Captain Susanne Sebring.
