The Great Mills Hornets stepped into the sold out ‘Birdcage’ at Leonardtown High School and had a tough battle until late in the fourth quarter but, came away with a 65-56 victory over the Raiders on Dec. 22. The contest was even at 16 ending the first quarter and Great Mills jumped out to a 33-25 lead at the half.
Leonardtown chipped away at that lead until Nick Shade’s consecutive three point plays cut the advantage for the Hornets to only one point at 49-48 with 6:03 remaining in the game. The intense Shade led the Raiders with 18 points, but, his excitement got the best of him as he earned a technical foul with 4:41 left and Great Mills’ Earl Castain hit both free throws and they also scored on the next two possessions and Leonardtown’s shooting touch went cold through the end of the game. DJ Hayden and Tyree Shields added eight points each for the Raiders.
Forward Brandon Teston led Great Mills with 16 points and Center JC Courtney added 10 for the Hornets. Next up for both teams is the Southern Maryland Holiday Tournament, held at Chopticon High Schoon Starting Tuesday December 28, 2010. Baynet Radio will kick off their Basketball coverage with both boys and girls action during this tournament. Listen for all the details.
