The St. Mary’s County Public School System is pleased to announce countywide prekindergarten roundups to screen children to determine eligibility for school year 2013 – 2014.ย All schools will hold prekindergarten roundups on Friday, April 19, 2013, from 9:30 a.m. – 12:00 noon and on Friday, May 17, 2013, from 11:30 a.m.ย – 2:00 p.m.ย The goal of the prekindergarten program is to provide initial learning experiences to help children develop basic skills and concepts necessary for successful school performance.ย A child must be four years old on or before September 1, 2013, and come from a family with an economically disadvantaged background.ย If vacancies remain after children from economically disadvantaged backgrounds have been enrolled, the remaining vacancies will be filled using locally determined at-risk criteria.ย
Parent(s)/Guardian(s) must provide a birth certificate, proof of residence, and complete the application form at the time of the prekindergarten screening.ย All children are screened to determine eligibility for prekindergarten.ย
Each elementary school will conduct the prekindergarten roundups for the children residing in their school zone.ย ย Questions regarding which school serves your residential area should be directed to the Department of Capital Planning at 301-475-4256, option 6.ย You do not need to pre-register for the countywide prekindergarten roundups.
If you qualify for entrance into the prekindergarten program, you may register for the 2013 – 2014 school year at the same time.ย If you choose to register for school at that time, you will need all of the following information:
- Birth certificate;
- Immunization record;
- Proof of physical residence; and,
- Court orders, notarized statements, or other legally binding instruments concerning custody, when custody of a minor student is an issue.
Documentation which indicates the current physical address of the student will be accepted as proof of residence.ย Proof of residence will include, but is not limited to, one of the following:
- Mortgage/deed/rental agreement with 911 address assignment;
- Current utility bill with parent/guardian name and 911 address of residence (no post office box is accepted – cable bills and wireless telephone bills are not acceptable); and,
