Barstow, MD – For 28 years it has been designated as the day Calvert’s school kids are turned loose and pack the county fairgrounds, forming long lines at various carnival rides, food stands and packing the bleachers at the outdoor pavilion. For the second year in a row, however, Youth Day at the Calvert County Fair was plagued by a stalled system that brought overcast skies and an intermittent drizzle.

There was still much to enjoy for the families and other youth who did attend the Calvert County Fair Friday, Sept. 30. For one thing, the midway rides were in motion, kids could win prizes showing off their skills with the hula hoop and local members of 4-H were busy displaying their hogs and sheep.

Some of the county’s female athletes used the event as a means to raise a bit of needed road trip money. As one member of a Calvert Soccer Association team told The BayNet, “at least 30 players”—ages 13 to 16—and at least two teams, have been invited to play in an international soccer tournament in Bermuda next April. The teams are trying to raise the funds through a raffle and T-shirt sponsorships. The grand prize of the raffle, which will be drawn in November, is a $500 Visa gift card.

Ashley King, a goalie with the Huntingtown High School girls’ varsity soccer team, was at the fair seeking support for Calvert Elite Soccer’s effort to send 18 players to Bradenton, FL this December for a major tournament. King said the raffle she was promoting at the fair had a grand prize of $350. The drawing is Dec. 4.

Other competitors at the 2016 county fair include the remaining contestants in the Calvert Idol Contest. Event coordinator Murphy Smilardo told The BayNet the field will be down to “six finalists after Friday night.” The half-dozen performers will then compete Saturday night for the 2016 Calvert Idol crown. The big show begins at 7 p.m.

Family Day on Saturday will include scheduled performances by several dance groups, comedian/magician Reggie Rice and appearances by retired Washington Redskins’ players Ricky Ervins (a member of the last ‘Skins team to win a Super Bowl) and wide receiver Santana Moss.

Sunday is Military Day and if pitching horseshoes is your sport, the county fair’s contest begins at 1 p.m. Pre-registration at the fair office window is required. Other highlights Sunday include the antique tractor pull at 10 a.m. and a 3 p.m. performance by the Country Gentlemen Tribute Band.
