ย Charles County Commissioner Debra Davis (D: 2nd) hosted a town hall meeting with residents of the second district on Thursday night to discuss hot button issues.
A large point of discussion revolved around the Comprehensive Plan. ย Davis stated that the process is in the Commissioner briefing point and that they are still a year away from voting for anything. ย The process has been narrowed down to two scenarios, one which includes the Priority Preservation Area. ย The first scenario, that does include the PPA, has gotten majority support from the community during the design charrettes.
ย
โAfrican Americans had no input,โ Cornell Posey, founder and President of the Bucket TEA Party said. ย โThe (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People) should have their own Comp plan meeting.โ
ย
Posey also asked why the PPA, which he claimed had no support from the community, was still included in Scenario One.
ย
โThey donโt understand the concept of what theyโre trying to do,โ Posey said. ย โItโs going to impact everyone, especially Nanjemoy. ย They want everything in Waldorf.โ
ย
Davis also spoke about the search for the homestead of Matthew Henson. ย She said the Charles County Historical Society and the State of Maryland were both in support of the search. ย
ย
โDuring Zekiah Fort research, when they were digging, they narrowed down where Henson home is,โ Davis said. ย โThe descendants of Henson were there during the Zekiah search. ย We need community to push it. ย There are plaques all over the state to honor him, but not in Charles County. ย These guys have an idea where the homestead is. ย Mike Sullivan is behind this, heโs one of the sponsors. ย Heโll probably work with the College of Southern Maryland and St. Maryโs College of Maryland.โ
ย
Davis also reiterated during the meeting that she was the lone vote against purchasing and placing a caboose on the Indian Head Rail Trail. ย She stated that a planned solar plant at SMECO in Hughesville would benefit Charles County as a whole. ย She also talked about the closure of Prime Time Barbershop in Bryans Road, which has drawn complaints from the community over partying. ย The owners have relocated to a location in Accokeek.
