Daryl Davis

Chesapeake Beach, MD โ€“ Despite the heat and the gloomy clouds above, a true success story shared the spotlight with other talented performers. Daryl Davis and his band performed at the Chesapeake Beach Resort and Spa band shell Thursday, Aug. 30. The troupeโ€™s playlist included classic tunes by Fats Domino, Ray Charles, Johnny Cash, Chuck Berry and an instrumental relic from the early days of Rock and Roll, Bill Doggettโ€™s โ€œHonky Tonk.โ€

The voicesโ€”individually and collectivelyโ€”of Angela Hill and Deletta Gillespieโ€”pleased the receptive audience and blended perfectly with the band. Hillโ€™s solo of Wanda Jacksonโ€™s 1957 rockabilly tune โ€œFujiyama Mamaโ€ was as good as the original.
In addition to vocals and keyboards, Davis also displayed his talents on guitar. The Chicago native is a perennial favorite at the Chesapeake Beach venue, going back to the days when live shows were held in in front of the hotel fountain. Davis has also played with other marquee performers plus he has played music with a former U.S. president (Bill Clinton).

In addition to music, Davis is a versatile performer, having acted in stage plays and on the television show โ€œThe Wire.โ€ He is also the author of a provocative, true-life book โ€œKlan-destine Relationshipsโ€”A Black Manโ€™s Odyssey into the Ku Klux Klan.โ€

With the days of summer all but officially over, Chesapeake Beach Resort and Spa will still be making the good times roll with entertainment, much of it indoors at the Rod โ€˜Nโ€™ Reel. On Saturday, Sept. 22 the resort and spa hosts the First annual Bourbon, Bacon and Beer Festival from 1 to 6 p.m. The band Out of Order will be featured.

Visit the resort and spaโ€™s web site for more information about upcoming events.
