MECHANICSVILLE, Md. — We are receiving reports of a structure fire and collapse earlier this evening that is sending multiple people to the hospital, including two children.
At approximately 7:56 p.m. on September 5, first responders were alerted to a deck which allegedly collapsed in 40000 block of Leeland Road. The caller reportedly indicated that the collapse came after a small fire was extinguished, and multiple people had been trapped on the ground level. The injuries included a mix of children and adults.
Upon arrival, crews determined that the accident was at the ground level of the property, and that there were present injuries of unknown severity, however nobody was trapped. First responders indicated that some of the injuries were impacting “possibly dangerous body areas.”
Two children, a 5-year-old girl and an 8-year-old boy, had also received burn injuries following the accident.
EMS on the scene would determine that the boy would need to be transported by helicopter to Children’s Hospital for further treatment following the accident. Trooper 7 from the Maryland State Police Aviation would land at Oakville Elementary School to make the transport.
The other child and two other adults would need additional treatment from area hospitals.
A total of four patients would be taken to the hospital, and two other patients would sign refusals for treatment.
No hazardous materials are believed to have been released at the scene.
This is a developing story. We will continue to provide updates if they become available.
