Benedict, MD – A house fire in Benedict occurred at 10:02 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 6 when a discarded cigarette ignited a small fire at 17118 Sweetwater Court, Benedict.
According to Deputy Maryland State Fire Marshal Don Brenneman, it took 20 firefighters from Benedict Volunteer Fire Department approximately five minutes to extinguish the small blaze. A neighbor discovered the fire.
Investigation by Brenneman and DCFM Duane K. Svites revealed the cause of the fire was the result of a slowly smoldering event that may have been the result of discarded smoking material. There was no reported injuries.
The home, owned by Paul Wilkerson, received $200 damage to the structure and another $200 damage to contents.
