Lexington Park, MD โ€“ย What authorities are calling โ€œcarelessly discarded smoking materialsโ€ sparked a fire that resulted in damage to a St. Maryโ€™s County home early Sunday morning, Dec. 28.

According to the Maryland State Fire Marshalโ€™s Office, the blaze occurred at a two-story, middle unit townhouse on F. Radford Lane in Lexington Park and was reported shortly after 7 a.m.

โ€œNo one was home at the time of the fire,โ€ stated Dfm. Caryn McMahon. โ€œA neighbor smelled the odor of smoke and called 911. The fire originated in a small trashcan in the upstairs bedroom. The sprinkler system activated quickly and extinguished the fire. The family has been temporarily displaced and is being assisted by the American Red Cross.โ€

Fifteen firefighters from Bay District and Patuxent Naval Air Station were dispatched to the one-alarm blaze. No injuries were reported. Along with the sprinkler system, a smoke alarm was activated. Damage to the homeโ€™s structure and contents is estimated at $8,000.

McMahon identified the owner of the home as Resheena Woodland.
