A pod of less than 10 Atlantic bottlenose dolphins were spotted swimming near Solomonโ€™s Island last week.

While a dolphin sighting may seem rare, experts say the ocean mammals are not uncommon for the region. They migrate up the northern Atlantic Ocean as far as New York and there even has been a sighting reported in the Potomac River near DC.

The Atlantic bottlenose dolphin, Tursiops truncatus, is a small-toothed whale that ranges from Cape Cod to the Gulf of Mexico. These mammals primarily occur in the saltier waters of the lower Chesapeake Bay in summer. โ€ฆ More Information from the Chesapeake Bay Program.
