According to Merriam-Websterโ€™s Dictionary, posture means the position or bearing of the body, whether characteristic or assumed for a special purpose. Okay, I didnโ€™t really understand that either so letโ€™s put it in โ€œEnglish.โ€ In other words, how you normally position your body at rest or when doing a certain task.

ย

Our posture is important for many reasons. It is the position of balance and alignment your body adapts and always returns to throughout our life. Over time it changes depending on our activities, lifestyles, and the demands we place on our bodies.

ย

The bones of your spine are designed to fit together in an S-shaped column of curves. They are balanced so your bodyweight is evenly distributed throughout your spine, allowing you to stand upright and see forward. If these curves are out of alignment and balance, they can cause stress to the muscles, spine and discs, and eventually cause pain. Itโ€™s similar to driving a car that pulls to one side.

ย

These curves play an important role in the way your body handles everyday stress. When something changes these curves such as gaining weight, an accident causing alignment problems or micro trauma from repetitive motion, your posture is compromised.
