โEvery patient carries his own doctor inside him. They come to us not knowing that truth. We are at our best when we give the doctor who resides within each patient a chance to go to work.โ โ Albert Schweitzer

MANโS GOT TO KNOW HIS LIMITATIONS
Eliminating certain foods from our diet can make us healthier. A great place to start would be to reduce the amount of sugar we consume each week. Soda has normal sugars and diet soda has bioengineered sugars. Fake sugars have been linked to many health problems like diabetes, obesity and bone loss in adolescents. Patients are amazed how much weight they lose just by removing soda from their diet. The calories from all sugary drinks can really add up.
ย
With all of your foods, check the labels. Sugar is fine in small amounts but when it sneaks into the majority of our foods it becomes unhealthy. The low calorie or no fat salad dressing you eat is mostly sugar. I mentioned how fat slows your metabolism down. Fat-free ice cream has no fat to slow the rate of sugar absorbed by the body, so you go through the rise in blood sugar levels. This leads to energy levels dropping, tiredness and unnecessary eating. That sugar rollercoaster ride can wreak havoc on your body. You would be better off eating a reasonable portion of regular ice cream.

Desserts, my weakness, are a big problem especially regarding self-control and timing. I know I would just as soon eat the six cookies in the pack in one day versus eating chunks of them and making them last. The sooner I get rid of them by demolishing them or tossing them out, the sooner they are no longer a threat. And if you know a food is a problem, donโt buy it! Then there is no temptation.
ย
More importantly, families eat dinner and then sometimes move right to the next course. Let the meal digest and wait before you knock back another 350 calories. How many families roll out the dessert tray soon after everyone has waddled their way to a couch? Itโs too much too soon. Sounds like what happens on turkey day.
ย
I didnโt say no more desserts ever. I suggested waiting, decreasing the portion, or how about yogurt with fresh berries. If you can limit the amount of sugar you eat, the pounds will melt away.
ย
If itโs fried then it has saturated fats or they are using an under-researched fat alternative to reduce the amount of saturated fat in a food. Try another way to prepare the food or donโt eat that one food all the time. If you like chicken wings for example: donโt eat them every night but try: having less at one sitting; eat them once a week or two; or, eat breast meat lightly fried in healthier oil with wing sauce.
ย
Maybe you like French fries or potato chips. Thinly slice potatoes or sweet potatoes, brush with a low saturated fat oil and flavor with salt, pepper, dill, garlic, onion or vinegar. Place them in a tray in the oven to bake. Have fun making your own treat. It is also a great learning and family cooking experience.
