โ€œThe older I get, the greater power I seem to have to help the world; I am like a snowball – the further I am rolled, the more I gain.โ€ โ€“ Susan B. Anthony

Well this could have really been a great article if all the hype about the Norโ€™easter storm actually brought us some snow. Being from NY I think shoveling snow and being cold is over-rated but for those of you who donโ€™t see it a lot, I understand. It is fun when itโ€™s here briefly and not like the 2010 barrage.

Besides slowing down and driving carefully, the difficult part about snow is shoveling it. Around 80 million Americans suffer back pain each year and these types of lifting injuries are a very common cause of back pain in the chiropractic office.

To avoid all of that harmful lifting here are some ideas to help you stay well. I think the home flamethrower makes sense here. My idea is you will never have a fight over who will clear out the driveway. Who wouldnโ€™t want to fire up that bad boy and melt some snow? It will take stress away from the low back and heck, you can cook up dinner in a pinch if you need food ready fast.

Okay seriously, if you can find a guy to plow your driveway and not destroy your lawn then the only place you will experience pain during the winter will be in your wallet. A great way to protect your spine. If you are convinced snow blowing the driveway is the best solution, then you have to do it wisely.

Yep, I used to enjoy a nice romantic walk in Syracuse with my girl, aka; the snow blower, every evening, and some mornings, because nothing says love like gasoline, engine noise, cold and dangerous equipment.

Speaking of loud, to decrease the ringing in my ears with all power equipment, I use ear plugs. I would never want to damage my hearing and miss an instruction from my wife or when she is telling me how to spend my weekend on her honey-do list. Haha.ย

For any piece of gear you have, I am a big fan of an electric starter. I donโ€™t care if itโ€™s your Harley or your leaf blower. Coming off the couch cold and stepping outside, without any loosening up and yanking a cord, which involves one side of your body, is just asking for trouble. This is the classic move that debilitates even the healthiest individual.
