On June 10 at 10:24 p.m., a Charles County Sheriff’s officer initiated a traffic stop in the 7000 block of Hawthorne Road in La Plata after observing a car speeding.
The driver refused to stop and turned down a driveway where he jumped out of the car and ran through the woods. The officer pursued the man on foot and apprehended him about a quarter mile away.
The driver, Jason Shawn Smoot, 26 of Pomfret, told officers he fled because his driver’s license was suspended.
Officer Brooks charged Smoot with fleeing and eluding and driving with a suspended license.
